Apollo School Day Live introduces the “Apollo Experience” to new generations of young theatergoers through live performances designed especially for school aged audiences. By bringing school groups out of the classroom and into the historic Apollo Theater, students get the exciting opportunity to experience live performances and learn about the arts, history, and culture alongside their peers and teachers.
The Gathering: A Collective Sonic Ring Shout brings the ancestral tradition of the Ring Shout into a contemporary context. Ring Shouts are an African and African American spiritual ritual of movement and song that draws on ceremonial structures from West Africa. Directed by National Black Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director, Jonathan McCrory, The Gathering: A Collective Sonic Ring Shout weaves together an array of multidisciplinary artists and features musical works composed for orchestra and choir. This School Day Live performance will feature excerpts from the full evening-length event premiering at the Apollo on May 7. The performance will engage audience members in the consideration of history and of recent events that have sparked challenging conversations around social justice and how the Ring Shout, brought into a contemporary context, can open a space to collectively grieve, awaken joy as a source of liberation, and to find love as a form of resistance.
