A Comprehensive Experience

Selected interns will learn how to develop an event through all of the following departmental lenses:
Development
Interns will learn how to cultivate relationships with donors and manage fundraising campaigns effectively. They will also gain experience in grant writing and stewardship practices.
Education
Interns will explore the creation and implementation of educational programs that engage diverse audiences. They will learn to collaborate with schools and community organizations to expand arts education outreach.
Marketing
Interns will understand how to create comprehensive marketing plans to increase audience engagement and ticket sales. They will also learn to utilize social media, email marketing, and other digital platforms to promote events.
Operations
Interns will gain insights into the logistics of running a performing arts venue, including scheduling, budgeting, and staff coordination. They will also learn to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Production
Interns will be introduced to the technical aspects of event production, such as lighting, sound, and stage management. They will also learn how to coordinate with artists and crews to ensure seamless performances.
Programming
Interns will learn how to curate diverse and compelling performances that cater to various audiences. They will also understand the process of negotiating contracts and booking talent.

This is a paid opportunity. Interns will be assigned to work with The Apollo staff  for eight (8) weeks to learn how to develop meaningful events and programs.

You Should Apply If…

  • Have a serious interest in learning about careers in arts and entertainment.
  • Are currently in the 12th grade (from September of the current year to June of the next.  
  • Are a New York City resident in the five boroughs.
  • Enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Are available to attend the entire program: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, March 4, 2025 – May 15, 2025 (as well as special event dates, as assigned), including Mandatory Intern Orientation, February 19-21, 2025.
  • Are available to attend (with a parent/guardian) a Program Orientation Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

Schedule

The Apollo Theater Academy Arts Administration Internship is ten (10) weeks in length. Interns work onsite at The Apollo on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays weekly during after-school hours (3:00-6:00 PM EST). Additionally, interns will be assigned to attend special events at The Apollo. Before applying, please strongly consider whether or not you can commit to attending the entire program.

Group Interviews
Group interviews will occur during after school hours, Monday through Thursday; September 30th to October 3rd.

Mandatory Parent/Guardian Orientation
Mandatory Parent/Guardian Orientation for accepted applicants. If accepted to the program, you will be required to attend this orientation with a parent or legal guardian.

Tuesday, March 4
The 2025 Administrative Internship Program begins
The 2025 Administrative Internship Program begins on Tuesday, March 4th and continues for ten (10) weeks through Thursday, May 15th. Only applicants who can commit to attending the entire program will be considered.

A School Tour at Apollo Theater

The Apollo offers engaging music, dance, and theater instruction while highlighting its rich history and ongoing significance to Harlem and Black culture. Programs are inquiry-based, interactive, and interdisciplinary, and Apollo School Programs connect to national, state, and local arts and academic standards.

Apollo School Apprentices

The Apollo Theater Academy provides opportunities for young adults in the performing arts and entertainment fields through workshops, internships, apprenticeships, and events.

  • The Arts Administration Internship explores the impact of arts administration on live and recorded productions at The Apollo, where students develop a concept for the signature summer event, Teen Takeover.
  • The Technical Stage Production Internship assigns students to work with members of The Apollo’s production crew, where they gain experience applying technical elements of theater such as lighting design, videography, audio engineering, carpentry, and production design to live and recorded stage productions.
  • The Apprenticeship program provides college students and recent graduates with training and mentorship as they work with Apollo staff to design, implement, and produce their own projects and/or events.

With Professional Learning workshops, Apollo Education energizes, inspires, and provides K-12 educators with resources and hands-on activities to connect the arts to classroom curricula, all while meeting educational and arts standards.

Professional Learning workshops are available to educators from all grade levels and disciplines. Workshops are intended to benefit both educators and their students and to provide educators with methods and strategies for teaching and learning through the arts and across disciplines. The Apollo is a NYS-approved provider for Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits.

Apollo Stories is an interactive digital learning hub for high school educators who want to spark critical thinking in the minds of their students. It provides lesson plans, resources, and activities that explore justice, culture, and identity. The inaugural lessons are built around The Apollo’s world premiere stage adaptation of Ta Nehisi-Coates' Between the World and Me.

Geared towards activating and amplifying the voices of high school-aged students, the program gives young people a framework to understand and navigate issues of contemporary America and reflects The Apollo’s commitment to utilizing the arts and humanities to foster conversation centered on the Black experience.

Apollo School Tours highlight the legendary history and performers of The Apollo, and the impact on music and performing arts development. All tours are thematic, inquiry-based, interactive, and use multimedia. They also connect to national, state, and local arts and academic standards.
