EDUCATION and COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Education and Community Outreach programs extend the Apollo Theater Foundation’s commitment to enhancing the life of the community and further its mission as a community resource. Through a variety of programs designed to engage children, adults, schools, families, artists and community-based organizations the education and community outreach activities build on the Apollo’s rich history as a cultural and economic anchor to the greater Harlem community.

Education and Community Outreach programs include:

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
The Apollo Theater Academy is being developed as a multi-faceted program that exposes young people to various, non-performing career options in the arts and entertainment industries.  In addition to its rich history in furthering the careers of many entertainers, The Apollo also has a legacy of providing tangible opportunities for technicians, designers and other industry professionals.  The Apollo Theater Academy advances career and leadership skill development through in-school seminars, internships and other programs tailored for New York City and tri-state region high school and college students and early career professionals in fields related to the performing arts and entertainment industry.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Through School Partnerships, the Apollo has established relationships with local New York City public schools through a variety of on-site and in-school education programs focused on the Apollo Theater and Harlem within the context of American history, arts and culture.  Historic Tours offer educational experiences that illuminate the history of Harlem through the lens of the Apollo, its legendary accomplishments, its role in the community and American history-particularly as it relates to 20th and 21st century music- and the many historical figures that have crossed the Theater’s threshold and performed on its stage. A companion Study Guide is available for use as a pre or post tour resource.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The outreach programming allows The Apollo to be an even greater community resource.

Harlem SummerStage, a summer concert series, features a diverse selection of arts and entertainment including music, dance and spoken-word all offered free to the public.  The Harlem SummerStage is organized in cooperation with the New York City Housing Authority and the New York State Office of General Services.

Family Programs combine fun and educational events with an opportunity to experience live performances at The Apollo Theater. Events include Holiday Celebrations of Kwanzaa and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; an annual African American History Month Celebration; Movies for Kids- free screenings of first run movies appropriate for young people, their parents and caretakers; and Family Night Out, free opportunities for economically challenged constituents to experience live cultural events and film screenings at the Theater.

Each year the Apollo participates in the New York State Martin Luther King, Jr. Literacy Initiative and the MLK, Jr. Canned Food Drive by collecting books and food donations and sponsoring events at the Theater to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
